360 Problems Xbox Controller?

My boyfriend and I recently purchased an Xbox 360 (it is only about one week) and we had problems with the radio controller that comes with it. The connection and so on is good, but mostly down the D key may be unresponsive and space on the left sleeve may stick to scroll through menus and when we're not even touching the controller. We got the console GameStop, and they give an automatic guarantee for one year for the console in which they will be replaced by a new system if it fails. We wondered if this is for the controller that goes with that, or if we would have to contact Microsoft about the problems with the controller. It is too late here to contact Gamestop, and we wanted to check here before we crossed the problem with discussing that with them. Any such assistance would be appreciated.
