What does "consistent with the parameters of the family" average with video games?

I just bought Lost Planet for Xbox 360. In the case in the back just above the symbol DOLBY is a "consistent with the parameters of the family. What does this mean? Can I control over the game? Do I have an external filter for this? I saw this on other games like The Godfather and Tony Hawk, but what is it for?

"Family Settings" can be changed from the Xbox360 dashboard under the purple "Console Settings" from the blade. For example, if you want to lock your Xbox so that young children do play some / violent games, then you can do so by adjusting the parameters of the family.
