Xbox 360 2 wireless controllers they run on batteries? Do I need to load them or what?

I just got the Xbox 360 Elite on ebay. It has 2 controllers Wireless but the thing is I know nothing about controllers .... Should I use batteries? Should I buy this load and play the thing? If I can not else I need? : S should I get one or two?
